The month started off with a fireóEscape Fire, that is. Our parent organization, Health & Disability Advocates, kicked off their 20th anniversary celebration by hosting the Chicago premiere of this powerful film about the future of health care on October 5th. The event was a huge success, as was the panel, featuring insights of David Carvalho of Cook County Health and Hospitals System and Dr. Kohar Jones of Doctors for America. See highlights in Crain’s.
Election Day is around the corner, yet momentum for the Affordable Care Act did not slow down in Illinois. Two key policy decisions were made this month:
1.Health Insurance Exchange: It’s official. Gov. Quinn announced Illinois will run an Exchange in partnership with the federal government. Enrollment begins in less than 12 months. Yikes! Advocates, insurance companies, brokers and others have started planning outreach and enrollment. What’s more, the state intends to run its own exchange by 2015.
2.Cook County Waiver: Just last Friday, the federal government approved a $100M waiver for early implementation of the Medicaid expansion under the ACA. This means health care access and a medical home for over 100,000 low income Cook County residents. Stay tuned!
